BULLEH SHAHTHE LIVING VERSE
FROM THE WORDS OF BULLEH SHAH

Pattīāñ likhūñgī maiñ Shām nūñ

I will write letters to Shyam

Two ways into the same verse. Tap a line to find its echo.

Letters for Shyam, whom my eyes cannot find.

The courtyard frightens me. How will night end?

My hem is paper; my tears supply the ink.

Separation burns; I feed my heart to its fire.

I ask every learned man in the world.

Blame no book: my own fortune has turned.

Sleep has fled abroad, another enemy.

I weep to soothe my heart and double its grief.

My eyes run dry. Who bound them with a spell?

Pain given by another wakes in every pore.

The heartless one touches my arm and flees.

Brother astrologer, give me one true word.

If my stars are empty, say nothing.

A dark room, without lamp or wick.

They lead me by the arm; no friend comes along.

No flight, no escape: true love makes a mendicant.

Two strands, three, four: love hangs its chains on me.

Both guilty ones are gone; the blow falls on me.

Inayat Qadiri has gone; my story darkens again.

Love stitches its thread through my quilt of cares.

The happy sleep; the grieving keep vigil.

Flowers in my hand: who will buy?

Door to door I call; everyone must leave.

Come to love's city, where my beloved lives.

Bullah, one request: let me see You.

Letters for Shyam, whom my eyes cannot find.

The courtyard frightens me. How will night end?
