BULLEH SHAHTHE LIVING VERSE
FROM THE WORDS OF BULLEH SHAH

Nī kuṭīchal merā nāñ

They call me the wayward one

Two ways into the same verse. Tap a line to find its echo.

The mullah taught; I never passed love's first letter.

His shoes struck me: Wayward, they named me.

Our eyes met, and all my friends turned on me.

My parents joined them: Wayward, they named me.

No welcome with my in-laws, no shelter among kin.

My childhood home shuts its door: Wayward, they name me.

They beat me for the lesson; he will not release me untaught.

Where can I turn, sister, branded wayward everywhere?

Bullah, feel a little of what the beloved has done to me.

Then you will judge me justly, the one they call wayward.
