FROM THE WORDS OF BULLEH SHAH

Main Chuhretari Aa Sache Sahib De Darbaron

A Sweeper from the True Lord’s Court

Two ways into the same verse. Tap a line to find its echo.

Bare feet, hair unbound: a message came from the farther shore.

What use this bustle? What can I take away?

I lift my basket, winnow greed, and scatter the world's dues.

I am the true Lord's sweeper, come from his court.

Across repeated births, Hindu and Muslim labels do not hold.

Forbidden, permitted—neither net has caught me.

I know the guru and the pir; for them I give my head.

I am the true Lord's sweeper, come from his court.

I swept the knots and shorn heads into a heap, and claimed a glimpse of love.

I lifted my lover's veil; before that court my shame was gone.

Bulleh, be his own, and leave the world's forced labour.

I am the true Lord's sweeper, come from his court.
