BULLEH SHAHTHE LIVING VERSE
FROM THE WORDS OF BULLEH SHAH

Ik alif paṛho chhuṭkārā e

Read one alif and be free

Two ways into the same verse. Tap a line to find its echo.

From one alif, two, three, four; then thousands, millions more.

Then more than any count: wondrous is that single point.

Read one alif and be free.

Why read cartloads of books and carry torments on your head?

You wear the hangman's face; ahead the road is hard.

Read one alif and be free.

You learn the Quran by heart and polish every word.

Then your thoughts turn to fine food; your mind runs like a courier.

Read one alif and be free.

Bullah, a banyan seed was sown and grew into a mighty tree.

When the tree passed away, the seed remained once more.

Read one alif and be free.
