BULLEH SHAHTHE LIVING VERSE
FROM THE WORDS OF BULLEH SHAH

Vāh vāh ramz sajaṇ dī hor

The beloved’s secret is something else

Two ways into the same verse. Tap a line to find its echo.

Ah, the beloved has a stranger secret.

Save for the lover, blind eyes cannot know.

From the roof I cry: people, do not buy love.

Do not trust its lure; no wild or town will shelter you.

Ah, the beloved has a stranger secret.

In both worlds love strips them; the beloved's grace slays.

None escapes love's wound; it binds and tears its captive.

Ah, the beloved has a stranger secret.

One glimpse, then gone: the noose fell without warning.

Careless of me, that deceiver of Lahore.

Ah, the beloved has a stranger secret.

Separation devours Shirin; poor Farhad cuts the height.

Joseph sold in Egypt: what could blind eyes know?

Ah, the beloved has a stranger secret.

Layla and Majnun captive, Sohni beneath the flood.

Heer lost her whole home; the beloved drew her thread.

Ah, the beloved has a stranger secret.

Lovers wander wordless, forever wine-drunk.

Bound in those tresses, no strength avails.

Ah, the beloved has a stranger secret.

Let my heart's beloved come: my life is His.

Another Joseph in beauty, famed through the world.

Ah, the beloved has a stranger secret.

None sees the Lord, Bulleh; who does is lost to all reckoning.

No colour, no form, no line: He comes as the thief.

Ah, the beloved has a stranger secret.

Save for the lover, blind eyes cannot know.

Ah, the beloved has a stranger secret.
