Why Have You Delayed, Beloved?

Two ways into the same verse. Tap a line to find its echo.

Why so long, my love?

All of me is offered to him.

Parting has hurt me beyond bearing.

A drum upon my head; ladle, bundle, iron pan for company.

Why so long, my love?

Plundered wide awake at home, though never had I kept such company.

My own beloved struck me down; why look away now?

Why so long, my love?

Bulleh gives himself to you, again a thousand times.

Your face is all my treasure; all I am is yours.

Why so long, my love?

Five pirs shelter my love and seek him in the world.

Grace rests upon him; from the unseen he stirs the string.

Why so long, my love?

Be, and it is rang out; from Takht Hazara Ranjha came.

They called him Chuchak's servant; he was lord of clarity.

Why so long, my love?

Ranjha, come to Multan; seek the blessing of Bahawal Pir.

Bring your longing to fulfilment; my soul desires the Lord.

Why so long, my love?

Where love makes camp, patience and peace depart.

Who speaks of escape? Love's cord is round my neck.

Why so long, my love?

The Khera wedding party comes; poor Heer is undone.

My body's blood runs dry; absence strikes and strikes.

Why so long, my love?

The proud groom mounts his horse; the faqir lies in dust.

Why this hollow pride? Why such indifference?

Why so long, my love?

The Kheras' pir rode in and raised a clamour.

I could not see my love; my grief cried out.

Why so long, my love?

I am his and he is mine, though our bodies are apart.

I will bring my case at Judgment, when divine justice speaks.

Why so long, my love?

Chuchak called the judge; my heart chose only Ranjha.

He forced the wedding words and said his duty was done.

Why so long, my love?

Oil and bridal paste on my shoulders, sandalwood upon my brow.

My love is in the wild—what use these wedding bangles?

Why so long, my love?

All else was ceremony; this pain I cannot bear.

Ranjha bore the drum, the bundle, the iron pan.

Why so long, my love?

He dropped the drum and climbed the hill, repeating her name.

He pierced his ears for rings and carried jaggery as offering.

Why so long, my love?

He bowed to Gorakh, crying Heer, Heer.

For her he shaved his head; her face had faded pale.

Why so long, my love?

The yogi sought his discipline, head and face shaven clean.

Saffron clothed him; a dark cord circled his neck.

Why so long, my love?

The yogi reached the Kheras' town and found the door he needed.

His horn sounded at the door; grace itself drew near.

Why so long, my love?

A scuffle at the door: the bowl broke, the grain scattered.

Who could read his stratagem? Millet lay across the path.

Why so long, my love?

He gathered grain into his cloth, his eyes turned toward Heer.

Fate gave its written portion; tearful eyes battled like soldiers.

Why so long, my love?

Sehti understood; the pain of both was one.

Love-drunk too, she and Heer laid down their mat of grief.

Why so long, my love?

Sehti laid her plan: Heer seemed struck by a snake.

The yogi came with healing words, and both found their desire.

Why so long, my love?
