BULLEH SHAHTHE LIVING VERSE
FROM THE WORDS OF BULLEH SHAH

Hatthī ḍhilak gaī mere charkhe dī

My spinning wheel’s handle has slipped

Two ways into the same verse. Tap a line to find its echo.

When will dawn arrive and my love show his face?

The spindle bends and bends; who will fetch the smith?

My wheel's handle has slipped; I can spin no more.

Smith, straighten the spindle; the thread will not move.

It shakes with every turn; how shall I lift the spool?

My wheel's handle has slipped; I can spin no more.

No strip to bind the spindle-rest, no cord within my reach.

No grease for the leather; the cord keeps slipping loose.

My wheel's handle has slipped; I can spin no more.

Friends call me to spin; separation beats the drum.

No rod to roll the cotton; the calf has eaten the rolls.

My wheel's handle has slipped; I can spin no more.

My love has gone with the herd; who cares now to spin?

My eyes follow my love; my heart runs to the woods.

My wheel's handle has slipped; I can spin no more.

Let him come to me now—who will carry my plea?

Bullah, I have spun a mountain; let my love take me in his arms.

My wheel's handle has slipped; I can spin no more.
