BULLEH SHAHTHE LIVING VERSE
FROM THE WORDS OF BULLEH SHAH

Bhainān main kattdī kattdī huṭṭī

Sisters, I am worn out with spinning

Two ways into the same verse. Tap a line to find its echo.

The basket lies behind me; a wisp of cotton stays in my hand.

Wheel before me, stool behind—the thread snapped in my hand.

Sisters, I am worn out with spinning.

What need of dowry jewels? Love has cut away my hand.

Bring me that thief, the thief who cut my life in two.

Sisters, I am worn out with spinning.

Good that the wheel broke: my life is freed from pain.

Bullah, the master set me dancing; all around, the clattering storm.

Sisters, I am worn out with spinning.
