FROM THE WORDS OF BULLEH SHAH

Forty knots until the wedding

Two ways into the same verse. Tap a line to find its echo.

Speak, my heart, of the wedding ahead: how many knots shall I tie?

At the destined hour the wedding comes; forty knots count down my time.

My father came to tell me: child, your husband's house awaits.

Another custom rules that house; these doors will close behind.

I loose the first knot, sit, and weep.

Go I must: let me dye the gifts I take.

I turn toward the market, where all go on their way.

No coin lies in my fold; they all turn away.

The second knot: what shall I say? My days are growing few.

The pains arrive together and make my breast their home.

Distraught, undone, I cannot spin one thread.

The wedding comes upon me like officers in a raid.

The third comes loose through tears that will not cease.

Whom can I ask? The days slip through my hands.

The skilled are loved; what gift have I to bring?

I wring my hands, then clutch my head and cry.

At the fourth knot all my friends came near.

None took my pain to heart; they hurried home.

A foreign land awaits: what use is pride?

My father sends me onward; my nurse cannot come too.

I cry and plead as I undo the fifth.

That first night haunts me: how could I forget?

So little time to make the gifts I need.

Tell his people: let me tie more knots, gain time.

At the sixth knot I cry out to the world.

What shall I do? I am a guest beneath this roof.

Parting grips my thoughts: what work can these hands do?

My eyes pour out like channels from the wheel.

I raise the seventh knot and try again.

Tears wear me down; my colour turns sickly pale.

Pain toys with me; I cannot hold my wits.

Tell me, friends: will one of you come too?

Mad with grief, I reach toward the eighth.

I roast like meat, like a fish hauled from the stream.

Cruel new pains arrive to drink my blood.

In separation's forge our forms are beaten out.

I loose the ninth; so few days now remain.

No cotton roll is spun; whole bundles still await.

I fell in supplication; no one held me up.

Neglect undid my house and lost the coming game.

I loose the tenth and ask why I was born.

My kin prepare my clothes and send me from this land.

Mother, had poison mingled with my infant draught,

This torment would have missed me; you would have set me free.

Eleven knots lie open; separation strikes.

My friends have gone as brides; now comes my turn.

An arm beneath my head brings no sleep at all.

They salt the wounds while blood still seeps from them.

The twelfth comes loose: what scene will now unfold?

The stricken feel the wound; the world sees only sport.

Some leave and do not return; each victory turns to loss.

These eyes have watched them turn to graveyard dust.

Thirteen knots: my eyes run red with grief.

The party grows impatient; washermen wash the cloth.

My dear one sleeps beneath a sheet inside his cell.

Ages have passed; he has not woken yet.

Fourteen knots, and blood is all my food and drink.

My road leads through the haunts of thieves.

Who comforts one whom separation wounds?

Love's trial leaves not a drop of blood in me.

Fifteen days are spent in cries and sighs.

The silent city waits: fall silent now.

Sixteen knots lie loose; I am without defence.

No power can plead for us here, or where we go.

Our stay was but a passing yogi's visit.

Ahead, our camp is pitched on barren salt.

Seventeen knots through a harvest-time of pain.

Grief grips its cruel blade and strikes the dead.

My body shakes with pain, yellow as gourd blossom.

This was our stolen venture: coming to this world.

I loose the eighteenth, schooling my heart to yield.

Four brief days make separation's game.

Those parted from the beloved look on and die.

Departure's drums roll heavily above me.

Nineteen knots: I lay my anguish bare.

This country slips away; look at our plight.

Sisters and aunts have risen, one by one, and gone.

No one tells me where their footsteps lead.

Twenty knots undone: where can I run?

Another spell has caught me, neither asleep nor awake.

Five guests loom above me; every one remains.

Whoever bears this trial must live through parting's hour.

I must undo the twenty-first: the guards are at my heels.

Grief's oil anoints the bride; fresh summons press on me.

Life burns me as I live; attachment smites my face.

This roll of cotton fills my heart with desolation.

I reach the twenty-second, thinking of lords and kings.

Their camps have moved away; I open my eyes.

How could I stay? What garden gives me worth?

Empty I came, then wandered in a dream.

At twenty-three, the self is gathered in.

I cast my broken holdings down: how shall I know?

The snare turns back on me; another party calls.

I am torn apart, my heart in scattered shreds.

The twenty-fourth comes loose; the reckoning draws near.

Those whom we dreaded now stand close at hand.

No bridal suit is ready, no ornaments or gems.

His brothers' taunts must meet my silent lips.

I loose the twenty-fifth and take sorrow's hand.

Tears string my necklace, pain its hanging jewel.

Grief is my bridal paste; bitter wails anoint me.

With these two companions I must make my way.

At twenty-six the imam comes upon the scene.

Five days of life are counted in the reckoning.

Death's cups arrive, and each of us must drink.

This grief stays with us: bear it, lowly soul.

Loose twenty-seven, friends: every effort is spent.

My weeping eyes bring down the monsoon rains.

Each painful instant cost a hundred struggles.

Far is the road; the bundle weighs upon my head.

Twenty-eight knots; my reason leaves my side.

Hardship breaks upon me; tears well at my brow.

Pleasure yields me loss, and sorrow yields its gain.

Helpless, I seethe in sorrow's cauldron.

Twenty-nine knots cannot end this pain.

An arrow in my breast, I tear my hair.

This is the harvest of my journey here.

Swords broke my body, swept its beauty away.

The thirtieth comes loose in grief and pain.

This endless tale of troubles never leaves me.

Life does not circle back; the flesh finds no escape.

Parting fills my thoughts and hovers overhead.

One by one I loose them: thirty-one.

Whose water-bearer am I? How many wept here first?

Clever at the game, I found no winning move.

I played for victory; here I lost it all.

Thirty-two lie open, each in its appointed turn.

I wind one skein and stretch my waiting warp.

The warp has aged: how can I lift it now?

Fool that I am, with nothing earned, how shall I wed?

In the shade I loose the thirty-third.

Two or three days here, then with his people.

The Prophet's dye is ready: colour all my gifts.

The fortunate bride goes home steeped in that hue.

Thirty-four knots: the day comes ever closer.

I go toward my love: how have I made ready?

I knew the final hour and bound myself to love.

This flesh was bound for dust; I scattered it myself.

Bulleh, at thirty-five the bridegroom comes.

Perhaps this torment earns one glimpse of his face.

Pain was once slight; love drove me out of mind.

Let him enter our lane, and ease will follow.

Smiling, I loose the thirty-sixth in faith.

Joy dwindles as the weight of sorrow grows.

Love's wind blows through us, death on death.

Love's charms and spells still wait to be performed.

Thirty-seven knots: I stain my hands with henna.

I soften my skin, hoping for his arms.

Blessed the hour when he comes my way.

Let him embrace me: I will sing the bridal songs.

Thirty-eight knots: what reckoning remains?

No wedding shines unless I see your face.

Your mystery is married bliss: how shall I meet it?

I will clasp you in my arms, without a trace of fear.

All my friends help loose the thirty-ninth.

Inayat comes toward me, radiant with joy, to the bridal bed.

Bangles grace my arms, my hair is dressed, my hands adorned with bracelets.

In union's dye I steep my body and my mind.

In God's name I loose the fortieth knot.

She who loses self becomes the beloved's own.

His lovely wedding party comes; he sways into my sight.

Who loves the ruby of the heart takes on that ruby glow.

Put thought and worry all aside, and go with your beloved.

No other's name, no other's trace remains.

Now say 'Indeed, God,' and offer up your prayers.

The beloved is all; Abdullah is no more.
