BULLEH SHAHTHE LIVING VERSE
FROM THE WORDS OF BULLEH SHAH

bullhiā dharamasālā vich nāhīn

Hold to the true door

Two ways into the same verse. Tap a line to find its echo.

Not in the holy shelter where believers lay their offerings.

The mosque gives you a shove; its keeper gives a scowl.

The rich place men of power before their bolted doors.

Hold to the true God's doorway: there the heart's grief falls away.

THE POEM, GIVEN VOICE

One verse. Many voices.

Stay with the words.
Then hear how they travel.
