Bulla, who am I to say who I am?
बुल्ला की जाणा मैं कौण
No mosque can name me its believer;
ना मैं मोमन विच मसीतां
no unbelieving rite can hold me.
ना मैं विच कुफ़र दीआं रीतां
Neither pure nor stained can name me,
ना मैं पाकां विच पलीतां
neither a Moses nor a Pharaoh.
ना मैं मूसा ना फ़रऔन
Bulla, who am I to say who I am?
बुल्ला की जाणा मैं कौण
The Vedas and the books do not contain me;
ना मैं अंदर बेद किताबां
nor cannabis, nor cups of wine.
ना विच भंगां ना शराबां
Not with revellers, drunk and lost,
ना विच रिंदां मस्त ख़राबां
nor held by waking, held by sleep.
ना विच जागण ना विच सौण
Bulla, who am I to say who I am?
बुल्ला की जाणा मैं कौण
No gladness holds me, and no grieving;
ना विच शादी ना ग़मनाकी
no purity, no taint is mine.
ना मैं विच पलीती पाकी
Neither of water, nor of dust,
ना मैं आबी ना मैं ख़ाकी
neither the flame, nor passing wind.
ना मैं आतिश ना मैं पौण
Bulla, who am I to say who I am?
बुल्ला की जाणा मैं कौण
Arabia, Lahore: neither can claim me;
ना मैं अरबी ना लाहौरी
nor India, nor the town Nagaur.
ना मैं हिंदी शहर नगौरी
Neither a Hindu nor a Peshawar Turk,
ना हिंदू ना तुरक पशौरी
nor does Nadaun contain my home.
ना मैं रहिंदा विच नदौण
Bulla, who am I to say who I am?
बुल्ला की जाणा मैं कौण
Faith has not given me its secret;
ना मैं भेत मज़हब दा पाया
Adam and Eve have not borne me.
ना मैं आदम हवा जाया
I have not set a name upon myself,
ना मैं आपणा नाम धराया
nor rest in sitting, nor in wandering.
ना विच बैठण ना विच भौण
Bulla, who am I to say who I am?
बुल्ला की जाणा मैं कौण
At first, at last, myself I know;
अव्वल आखर आप नूं जाणां
no other stands apart for me.
ना कोई दूजा होर पछाणां
Who is there wiser than myself?
मैथों होर ना कोई सियाणा
